Pyrite is a beautiful iron sulfide (disulfide) mineral found in many geological formations from sedimentary deposits to hydrothermal veins and as part of metamorphic rocks. Named in antiquity from the Greek "pyr" for "fire", because sparks flew from it when struck with another mineral or metal.
** This higher quality pyrite cube specimen with excellent edges, faces and mirror luster, (in a limestone matrix) was obtained from a family that carefully extracts some of the best pyrite available in the world from their mine ( Alcarama mountain-chain ) in Navajun. La Rioja, Spain.
