How to Properly Clean and Cleanse Your Crystals: A Complete Guide
If you've been working with crystals, you've probably heard that they need to be cleansed regularly. But what does that actually mean — and how do you do it correctly without damaging your stones? This guide covers everything you need to know, from the difference between cleaning and cleansing to the safest methods for every crystal type.
Cleaning vs. Cleansing: What’s the Difference?
These two words are often used interchangeably, but they refer to different things:
- Cleaning is the physical process of removing dust, oils, and dirt from the surface of your crystal.
- Cleansing is the energetic process of clearing any absorbed or stagnant energy from the stone so it can work at its highest vibration.
Both are important — and ideally, you’ll do both when you first receive a new crystal and periodically as you work with it.
How to Physically Clean Your Crystals
For most polished stones and hard crystals (Mohs hardness 6 and above), a gentle physical clean is straightforward:
- Use lukewarm water and a soft cloth or brush to gently wipe the surface.
- Avoid harsh soaps or chemicals, which can damage the stone’s surface or luster.
- Pat dry immediately — never leave crystals sitting in standing water.
- For raw or matrix specimens, use a soft dry brush (like a paintbrush) to remove dust from crevices.
⚠️ Important: Not all crystals are water-safe. Stones that should never be submerged in water include Selenite, Malachite, Pyrite, Halite, Lepidolite, and any stone ending in “-ite” that has a low Mohs hardness. Water can dissolve, rust, or permanently damage these stones.
How to Energetically Cleanse Your Crystals
Once your crystal is physically clean, it’s time to clear its energy. Here are the most popular and effective methods:
🌕 Moonlight
One of the gentlest and most universally safe cleansing methods. Simply place your crystals outside or on a windowsill overnight during a full moon. The lunar energy will clear and recharge them simultaneously. This method is safe for all crystals, including water-sensitive ones.
Best for: All crystals, especially Pink Amethyst and other high-vibration stones.
🌿 Smoke Cleansing (Smudging)
Pass your crystal through the smoke of sage, palo santo, cedar, or incense for 30–60 seconds while setting an intention to clear any stagnant energy. This is a time-honored practice used across many cultures and is safe for all crystal types.
Best for: All crystals, especially those used for protection like Black Tourmaline.
🔮 Selenite Charging Plate
Selenite is one of the few crystals that never needs cleansing itself — it continuously self-clears and can cleanse other stones placed on or near it. Simply rest your crystals on a Selenite plate or slab overnight.
Best for: All crystals, and especially convenient for regular maintenance cleansing.

💨 Sound Cleansing
Sound vibrations — from a singing bowl, tuning fork, bell, or even clapping — can break up stagnant energy in and around crystals. Hold your crystal near the sound source or place it inside a singing bowl and let the vibrations do the work for several minutes.
Best for: Large collections, crystal grids, or any stone that’s hard to cleanse individually.
🌍 Earth Burial
Burying your crystal in the earth (your garden or a pot of soil) for 24 hours to a week allows the earth to absorb and neutralize any negative energy. Mark the spot so you don’t lose it! Rinse off any soil with water afterward — but only if the stone is water-safe.
Best for: Heavily used protective stones like Black Tourmaline and Arkansas Quartz.
💧 Running Water
Hold your water-safe crystal under cool running water (a natural stream is ideal, but tap water works too) for 30–60 seconds while visualizing any negative energy washing away. Always research your specific stone before using this method.
Safe for: Clear Quartz, Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Black Tourmaline, Smoky Quartz, Carnelian, and most hard stones.
Not safe for: Selenite, Malachite, Pyrite, Lepidolite, Angelite, and other soft or porous stones.

How Often Should You Cleanse Your Crystals?
There’s no hard rule, but here are some helpful guidelines:
- New crystals: Always cleanse when you first receive them to clear any energy from handling or shipping.
- Regularly used stones: Cleanse weekly or whenever they feel heavy or dull.
- Protective stones (like Black Tourmaline): Cleanse more frequently — they absorb a lot of energy and can become saturated.
- Display crystals: Once a month is usually sufficient.
- After intense emotional work or illness: Cleanse immediately.
Trust your intuition — if a crystal feels “off,” it’s probably time for a cleanse.
Setting an Intention After Cleansing
Once your crystal is cleansed, take a moment to reprogram it with a fresh intention. Hold it in both hands, close your eyes, and speak your intention aloud or in your mind. This reconnects your energy with the stone and activates it for its new purpose.
