This is a sensational, very large Quartz var. Amethyst "Grape Agate" specimen exhibiting as a very well defined, beautiful color, botryoidal formation with grape shaped spheroids all around this intriguing display piece! Most currently, through further peer reviewed, mineralogical study and agreement, this is Quartz var. Amethyst rather than Quartz var. Chalcedony. See the very informative article in The Mineralogical Record, Vol. 49, No. 6, pp. 827-836. Very cool textured, bubbly layered formation around the piece as well, more predominantly on each of the ends. Some the botryoidal spheroid grapes are a little larger than the norm. Botryoidal Amethyst is a less common occurrence. Quartz var. Amethyst "Grape Agate" varies in color from almost white to blue-lilac to lilac-purple to even green; those variances of color are evident in this piece.
